This section describes the windows that display the questions, answers, solutions, and instructions.
The Question Window
This window displays the current question.
The scrollbar at the left is used to select which test question to edit. If you hold down the option key and press the up or down arrow key, you move up or down one question, respectively. If you hold down the command key and press the up or down arrow key, you move to the first or last question, respectively.
The top number shows which test question you are looking at, while the bottom number shows how many questions there are in the test.
If you are using question categories, a popup menu will be visible at the top of the window. You can use this to change which category the current question is in. You can edit the categories with the “Edit question categories...” item on the Test menu.
The question text is displayed at the top of the window (below the category popup menu, if this is visible). If the question has a picture, it is displayed right below the question text. This picture is useful for displaying diagrams related to the text of the question. Use the Question menu to add, remove, and find questions and to add pictures to questions.
The answers are displayed in a scrolling list below the question. (This list is only visible if you have added answers to the question.) Each answer can be either text or a picture. Use the Answer menu to add and remove answers and to convert answers from text to pictures.
Each answer also has a radio button at its left. The selected radio button indicates the correct answer to the question.
The Solution button behaves differently in different modes. In Edit mode, the Solution button will always be visible so that you can edit the solution for any question. In Browse mode, the Solution button will only be visible if a solution has been added to the selected question. In Practice mode, the Solution button will only be visible after you have checked your answers and then only if a solution has been added to the selected question.
Click on the Solution button to display the Solution window. (This is described below.)
Whenever you move to a different question, the question text is automatically selected. You can select a different item by clicking on it. Pressing the “tab” key selects the next item down. Pressing “shift+tab” selects the next item up. If you reach the top or bottom item, the procedure will wrap around to the bottom or top, respectively. The selected item always has a frame around it.
The Solution Window
This window displays the solution for the current question.
The solution text is displayed at the top of the window. If the solution has a picture, it is displayed right below the solution text. This picture is useful for displaying diagrams and equations related to the text of the solution. Use the Solution menu to add a picture to a solution.
To select an item, simply click on it. Pressing the “tab” key selects the other item (text or picture). The selected item always has a frame around it.
Whenever you move to a different question, the Solution window is automatically updated. If the new question does not have a solution, the Solution window will disappear. In Edit mode, to add a solution to the question, click on the Solution button in the Question window to show the Solution window again and then enter the solution.
Note: When browsing or practicing a test, the Solution button will only be visible if a solution exists for the selected question. A solution exists only if the information displayed in the Solution window was changed by the person who created the test. Thus, when you create a test, don’t change anything in the Solution window unless you actually want to add a solution to the question. This way, the person browsing or practicing the test won’t see the Solution button unless there is a meaningful solution attached to the question. (To remove a solution, use “Remove” on the Solution menu.)
The General Instructions Window
This window displays instructions relevant to the entire test.
The text of the instructions is displayed at the top of the window. If the instructions have a picture, it is displayed right below the text. This picture is useful for displaying diagrams and equations related to the text of the instructions. Use the Instructions menu to add a picture.
To select an item, simply click on it. Pressing the “tab” key selects the other item (text or picture). The selected item always has a frame around it.
Note: When printing a test, the general instructions will only be printed if the information displayed in the General Instructions window was changed by the person who created the test. Thus, when you create a test, don’t change anything in the General Instructions window unless you actually want to add instructions. This way, the person taking the test on paper won’t see any instructions unless they are meaningful. (To remove unwanted instructions, use “Remove” on the Instructions menu.)
The Specific Instructions Window
If you are using question categories, you will be able to open the Specific Instructions window. This window displays the instructions relevant to a particular category.
When editing or browsing a test, a popup menu will be visible at the top of the window. You can use this to select which category’s instructions to display.
When practicing a test, the menu will not be available. Instead, the window will automatically display the instructions relevant to the current question.
